„A Thousand Lea­ves“ ist das zehnte Stu­dio­al­bum der US-ame­ri­ka­ni­schen Rock­band Sonic Youth. Es wurde am 12. Mai 1998 bei DGC Records auf CD und Kas­sette ver­öf­fent­licht. Es ist das erste Album der Band, das sie in ihrem eige­nen Stu­dio in Lower Man­hat­tan auf­ge­nom­men hat. Das Geld für die­ses Stu­dio hat­ten sie 1995 beim Lol­la­pa­looza-Fes­ti­val ver­dient. Da die Band nun gefühlt unbe­grenzt Zeit hatte, klingt das Album freier und her­aus­for­dern­der als seine Vor­gän­ger. Es ist ein expe­ri­men­tel­les, aus­ufern­des Werk, das ihre Liebe zur Impro­vi­sa­tion und zu avant­gar­dis­ti­schen Gitar­ren­land­schaf­ten auf die Spitze treibt. Songs wie ​„Wild­flower Soul“ und ​„Hoar­frost“ kom­bi­nie­ren ver­träumte Melo­dien mit noi­si­gen Eska­la­tio­nen, wäh­rend das über elf­mi­nü­tige ​„Hits of Suns­hine (For Allen Gins­berg)“ fast medi­ta­tiv wirkt. ​„Female Mecha­nic Now on Duty“ trägt Kim Gordons gewohnt rohe, man­tra­ar­tige Hand­schrift. So wird ​„A Thousand Lea­ves“ durch seine Viel­schich­tig­keit zu einer klang­li­chen Expe­di­tion, einer fas­zi­nie­ren­den Melange aus Noise, Dis­so­nanz und ver­steck­ten, wun­der­schö­nen Harmonien.
