Zwi­schen Sep­tem­ber 1971 und Okto­ber 1973 nahm The Modern Lovers ihr ers­tes Stu­dio­al­bum auf, das jedoch erst 1976 vom Label Bes­er­kley ver­öf­fent­licht wurde. In der Zwi­schen­zeit hatte sich die Band im Februar 1974 bereits auf­ge­löst. Die­ses selbst­be­ti­telte Debüt ist ein rauer, unge­schlif­fe­ner Mei­len­stein des Proto-Punk. Jona­than Rich­mans naive, aber ein­dring­li­che Texte tref­fen auf mini­ma­lis­ti­sche, von ​„The Vel­vet Under­ground“ inspi­rierte Arran­ge­ments – kein Wun­der, denn pro­du­ziert wurde das Erst­lings­werk von John Cale. Die aus­ge­kop­pelte Sin­gle ​„Road­run­ner“ wurde zu einem uner­war­te­ten gro­ßen Erfolg. Her­aus­ra­gend ist aber auch das melan­cho­li­sche ​„Hos­pi­tal“, ein ver­letz­li­ches Stück über ver­passte Chan­cen, eine große Liebe und einen Sui­zid­ver­such, das mit schmerz­haft ehr­li­cher Lyrik und düs­te­rer Instru­men­tie­rung berührt. Mit viel Humor hin­ge­gen kommt ​„Pablo Picasso¶ daher: Iro­nisch und mit wun­der­bar tro­cke­nem Witz hin­ter­fragt der Track das Frau­en­bild des berühm­ten Malers. Zum lako­ni­schen, fast amü­sier­ten Ton­fall Rich­mans gesel­len sich ein repe­ti­ti­ver Groove und ver­zerrte Gitar­ren. Obwohl die­ses rohe, unge­schlif­fene Album erst einige Jahre nach sei­ner Auf­nahme ver­öf­fent­licht wurde, beein­flusste es Gene­ra­tio­nen von Indie- und Punk-Musi­kern – ein zeit­lo­ser Klassiker.
