Mit ​„One Beat“ erschien im August 2002 auf dem Label Kill Rock Stars ein Album, das ein­mal mehr ein kraft­vol­les State­ment vol­ler Wut, Hoff­nung und poli­ti­scher Dring­lich­keit lie­fert. Slea­ter-Kin­ney prä­sen­tie­ren mit ihrem sechs­ten Stu­dio­al­bum eine explo­sive Mischung aus ihren Riot-Grrrl-Wur­zeln, kom­ple­xe­ren Arran­ge­ments und einer prä­zi­se­ren Pro­duk­tion. Das Trio um Corin Tucker, Car­rie Brown­stein und Janet Weiss kana­li­siert die Unsi­cher­heit der frü­hen 2000er-Jahre in Songs wie ​„Far Away“, das die Schock­wel­len von 9/​11 ver­ar­bei­tet, oder ​„Fun­e­ral Song“, einem der emo­tio­nal inten­sivs­ten Stü­cke des Albums. Mit düs­te­ren, ein­dring­li­chen Gitar­ren und Corin Tuckers kla­gen­dem Gesang bewegt sich der Song zwi­schen zurück­hal­ten­der Melan­cho­lie und explo­si­ven Aus­brü­chen. Janet Weiss’ prä­zi­ses, fast mar­sch­ar­ti­ges Drum­ming ver­stärkt das Gefühl einer melan­cho­li­schen Abschieds­hymne vol­ler roher Emo­tio­nen. Tucker und Brown­stein über­zeu­gen auch auf die­sem Album mit ihrem typi­schen Wech­sel­spiel aus schnei­den­den Riffs und ein­dring­li­chem Gesang, wäh­rend Weiss’ dyna­mi­sches Schlag­zeug­spiel die Inten­si­tät zusätz­lich stei­gert. ​„One Beat“ ist oben­drein ein poli­ti­sches Mani­fest – laut, lei­den­schaft­lich und unerschütterlich.
